English: French author J.K.

The Impacts of the Mau Mau Rebellion on Kenya in 1950 - 2200 Words
The Impacts of the Mau Mau Rebellion on Kenya in 1950 (Research Paper Sample) Content: Karatina UniversityItiati campusSchool of education and social sciencesBachelor of education artsDepartment of humanities and languagesWafula wayongà ¢Ã¢â ¬o hendrickEd/049/11History of Kenya from 1919 to 1963His 221Task: discuss the causes and impacts of maumau rebellion in kenya.Presented to: ms kavulavuDate: 13th march 2016Introduction.The mau Mau movement of Kenya was a nationalist armed peasant revolt against the British colonial state, its policies and its local supporters. The overwhelming majority of the Mau Mau fighters and their supporter who formed the à ¢Ã¢â ¬ÃÅ"passive wingà ¢Ã¢â ¬ came from the Kikuyu ethnic group in central province. Similarly there was also representation in the movement from the Embu, meru and kamba ethnic groups. In addition, available evidence show that some individual members of the Luo, Luhya, and even the Maasai ethnic groups participated in the revolt as wellMost of the Mau Mau guerillas were young men and landless pea sants who had lost land to corrupt chiefs and other à ¢Ã¢â ¬ÃÅ"landed gentryà ¢Ã¢â ¬ in central province, while others were victims of land appropriation carried out to enable European settlement. Repatriated African squatters from the White Farms in the rift valley fueled the ranks of the guerillas, as did the economically desperate and the unemployed Kikuyu in Nairobi and the surrounding urban centre. This was due to the post-world war two periods where there was massive African unemployment, along with very poor housing and high inflation. The Mau Mau rebellion rose up around 1952. Undeniably, it was caused by the growing interest between the Kikuyu and the white European settlers in Kenya. However, despite growing unrest, there are no precise causes except for the economic, social and political tensions caused by the colonial administration in an attempt to discover the real reasons for the Mau Mau rebellion.Arguably, one of the core reasons for the rebellion was the econ omic deprivation of the Kikuyu. The kikuyu had long been unhappy with White Settlers taking their land hence this economic deprivation led to vast discontent. Despite attempts to address this issue the Kikuyu were ignored. Michael Coray has argued that failing to create a system through African grievances against white settlers could be settled fairly, the colonial administrators laid a platform for the development of the Mau Mau rebellion.Social conditions of the Africans in Kenya cannot be ignored when addressing the outbreak of the Mau Mau rebellion. Harsh restrictions were placed upon Africans; they were taxed heavily considering they were earning only a fifth of the wages white settlers and racial tensions increased. White settlers saw the African as agricultural competitors hence heavy restrictions were placed on them. Disciplinary measures were introduced on peasants who were often tortured and mistreated by White settlers. These horrific treatments only angered the Africans further and caused greater discontent between Africans and the Setttlers. The vast growth of Kikuyu Central Association (KCA) also played a major role in the rise of the revolt. KCA made its aims clear to reclaim land taken from them hence creating protests which demonstrates the unrest among the Kikuyu prior to the rebellion. They also demanded higher wages and the right to grow coffee again. Despite these protests, KCA was largely ignored but since their grievances originated in the 1920s and 1930s, by 1952 when Mau Mau broke out, decades had passed with little changes and with little benefit to Kikuyu.Other factors such as unemployment, poverty and overpopulation from economic deprivation furthered the outbreak of the rebellion. It caused Africans resentment and anger as they were forced to move to cities in search of employment opportunities and also run away from the overpopulation in the reserves had been à ¢Ã¢â ¬ÃÅ"dumpedà ¢Ã¢â ¬. In the cities, they got low paying jobs such as clerks and meters readers which could not meet there needs and those of their families.Impacts of Mau Mau rebellionDuring the mau mau rebellion, the movement à ¢Ã¢â ¬ÃÅ"weightà ¢Ã¢â ¬ could be felt. Some of the most seen effects included:Many people lost their lives which led to depopulation. About 100 Europeans and 2000 pro-British africans lost their lives. Over 10000 energetic men were killed and this lead to massive loss of productive labor led to economic decline in Kenya after 1956.Kenyans were allowed to participate legislative in large numbers. In 1958 Lennox constitution was drawn which provide for 15 members of African Representation to the council. Members such Arap Moi, Oginga Odinga and Tom Mboya joined the Leg co and later become influential in the struggle for independence. The rebellion led to the leaders of the Mau Mau and their accomplices being arrested and detained in prison for a long time hence the suffering and misery. Examples of the detainees include Jomo Kenyatta, Fred Kubai, and Achieng Oneko among others. Ground fighters such as Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi underwent more severe and ruthless torture with Dedan being executed.Activities of the Mau Mau uprisings put pressure on the colonial government to the extent that Kenya got her independence in 1963. The colonial government was forced to undertake social, economic as well as political reforms. For instance, in 1958 constitutional reforms were adopted which quickened the way to multi-racial form of government in Kenya. For the first time, Africans were included in the local and national politics.Mau Mau rebellion affected the settlemen...

10 Easy Ways to Improve Your Language Skills While Studying Abroad Hult Blog
Written by Alan Pierce, Mastersà student, San Francisco campus, class of 2016. No matter where you are in the Hult campus community you are no doubt surrounded by foreign languages. This global environment is one of the unique aspects of the Hult experience ââ¬â itââ¬â¢s also a great opportunity to deepen (or begin) your foreign language-learning journey. You likely have people that speak your target language and also people hoping to learn like yourself! This is one of the benefits of studying abroad. When I first went abroad for undergraduate studies, from the U.S. to Spain, I had one year to be fully immersed in the Spanish language. Because I had English-speaking friends there as well it was tempting to speak in our native language. Still, I made efforts to bring Spanish more fully into my life which helped me approach fluency by the time I left the country. Below I list 10 ways to improve language skills: Change your computerââ¬â¢s default language Netflix and chill Stop hanging out with your countrymen Read a book you already know well Post-it Notes are your friend Carry a dictionary with you, always Network in a foreign language Play improv games with your friends Memorize lyrics to songs Download an app Change your computerââ¬â¢s default language. This is arguably the easiest step to take. On a Mac it takes three clicks. As any 21st century student knows, school life keeps us locked to our computers and tablets (as if we werenââ¬â¢t already). Learning to navigate your technology in the language you wish to learn is a à great way to keep that language fresh in your mind every day ââ¬â and to learn new words that will soon become second nature. That way, even if youââ¬â¢re on Facebook during class youââ¬â¢re still being a little bit productive. Netflix and chill Give new meaning to the term ââ¬Å"Netflix and chillâ⬠by watching shows in your target language. Netflix and other streaming sites offer a variety of foreign-language films and TV shows, in addition to subtitles and dubbing of your favorite shows. You already know you are going to watch Netflix to procrastinate your readings ââ¬â might as well earn some guilt-free productivity points by streaming Friends en espaà ±ol. Stop hanging out with your countrymen Okay, you donââ¬â¢t have to completely run away from them but if you spend time with people who speak your native language chances are youââ¬â¢ll speak your native language. I know this from both personal experience and observing other students at Hult. One way you can actually take advantage of this is to find a group of people from the country whose language you want to learn and hang out with them. Theyââ¬â¢ll speak their native language, and youââ¬â¢ll be learning all kinds of new slang, and probably words that donââ¬â¢t even translate to your native language. Read a book you already know well Are you trying to learn German? Do you recite Harry Potter quotes with your friends? Perfect. Pick up ââ¬Å"Harry Potter und der Gefangene von Askabanâ⬠and youââ¬â¢re well on your way to learning some awesome new words in German. I read the first four Potter books in Spanish and can now tell my Spanish-speaking friends what my Patronus looks like. Harry Potter references aside, the familiarity of the book you choose will enable you to understand what youââ¬â¢re reading and facilitate a quick and fun learning of new words and phrases. Post-it Notes are your friend My brother went to Argentina for one year just after high school. When he left he knew dazzling Spanish basics like ââ¬Å"Where is the bathroom?â⬠When he came back he spoke like a fully-fledged Argentinian cowboy. One of the secrets to his language transformation: a Post-it note wall in his room. Every day he learned new words he would write them down on a Post-it and put it on the wall in his room. Apparently, literally being surrounded by words is a good way to get them stuck in your brain. Carry a dictionary with you, always An underrated form of language learning, pocket dictionaries can help you navigate spontaneous situations or answer a nagging vocabulary gap on the fly. I tried to learn snowboarding in Spain and had my trusty mini dictionary with me, which turned out to be crucial for asking about the right ski lift to ride in order to avoid the steep expert hill. While I never really learned to snowboard, I avoided needing any injury-related vocabulary. Network in a foreign language Networking is an art, and for most not an easy one. Add a new language to the mix and, well, youââ¬â¢re more committed than most language learners I know. Of course, youââ¬â¢ll want to have conversational proficiency before attempting this, but connecting at an event in such a way not only reflects your discipline to learning, but a willingness to take risks. If youââ¬â¢re interested in working in a foreign professional environment networking is a great place to practice talking about your industry and demonstrating your language capacity to that network. Play improv games with your friends This will depend on your current level of language learning, but improvisation activities offer some of the most engaging ways to get better and have fun at the same time. Your city may even have local groups dedicated to improv in different foreign languages. If that sounds terrifying, use Google to search for improv activities you can play with your friends. When learning a language you may fear making a fool of yourself. With improv thatââ¬â¢s the point! Problem solved. Memorize lyrics to songs If youââ¬â¢ve ever lived abroad then you have probably experienced going to a bar or club to experience the local music scene. While your local friends are singing along to their favorite jams you smile and pretend you know what is happening. Take the time to learn the lyrics to some of the local music. Songs are a great way to help words stick. And nothing connects you quicker with a local culture than belting out a karaoke song in the local vernacular. Download an app Remember the productivity points I mentioned earlier? Hereââ¬â¢s another way to earn those while youââ¬â¢re immersed in your smartphone. Language-learning apps have their limitations but they do provide an easy way to always have a language lesson at your fingertips. Some of my favorites are Duolingo,à Memrise, and English Live. Just donââ¬â¢t get caught in class practicing your daily lesson. I hope these will be useful to you as you continue to dive into the learning of a new language. Donââ¬â¢t forget that the Hult community is a resource itself. Whether there is a Language Club on campus or not, you are surrounded by native speakers of many languages who are all potential language mentors. Good luck, or as they say in Spanish, buena suerte! Gender Socialization Of Children Gendered Toys, Media,...
Abstract Gender role expectations are inescapable in our society as we naturally tend to sort humans into categories, the easiest one being gender. Upon first meeting a person, most people automatically classify the otherââ¬â¢s gender. With this classification come the inevitable gender role expectations. Even for those who consciously try their hardest not to cloud their perceptions of others based on ââ¬Å"traditionalâ⬠gender role expectations, it is almost impossible not to subconsciously succumb to these expectations that are ingrained in our minds virtually since the day we are born. These expectations often influence how one interacts with another. This is especially important when taking into consideration the effects that gender socialization of children through gendered toys, media, and parental affects child development. Introduction Once a child is born, he or she learns to view the world based on the behaviors of others. The childââ¬â¢s primary caregivers, usually the parents, and others present in the childââ¬â¢s environment, such as siblings, peers, teachers, and even the media, contribute to the development of the childââ¬â¢s perception of himself, those around him, and society overall. This concept is called socialization. ââ¬Å"The way we are, behave and think is the final product of socializationâ⬠and it is through socialization that we ââ¬Å"learn what is appropriate and improper for both gendersâ⬠(Crespi, 2004). What Was the U.S. Second Party System
The Second Party System is the term used by historians and political scientists to refer to the framework that dominated politics in the United States from about 1837 to 1852. Spurred by the presidential election of 1828, the Second Party System represented a shift toward greater public interest in politics. More people voted on Election Day, political rallies became common, newspapers supported different candidates, and Americans became loyal to any of a growing number of political parties. Key Takeaways: The Second Party System The Second Party System is a term used by historians and political scientists to refer to the political framework existing in the United States from about 1828 to 1854.Following the 1828 presidential election, the Second Party System spurred increasing levels of voter interest and participation in the political process. The Second Party System is the first and only party system in which the two major parties competed on relatively equal footing in every region of the nation. The Second Party System reflected and shaped the American peoplesââ¬â¢ political, social, economic, and cultural concerns until it was replaced by the Third Party System in the mid-1850s. Not only did it help increase the American peoplesââ¬â¢ interest and participation in shaping their own government as intended by the Founders, the rise of the Second Party System also helped ease the sectional tensions that had led to the Civil War.à Supporters of the systemââ¬â¢s two dominant partiesââ¬âthe Democrats and the Whigsââ¬âwere divided along philosophical and socio-economic lines. While the Democratic Party was the party of the people, the Whig Party generally represented business and industrial interests. As a result, both parties shared the support of people in both the North and the South. History of the Second Party System The Second Party System replaced the First Party System, which existed from roughly 1792 to 1824. The First Party System featured only two national parties: the Federalist Party, led by Alexander Hamilton, and Democratic-Republican Party founded by Anti-Federalist leaders Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The First Party System largely collapsed during the nationââ¬â¢s so-called ââ¬Å"Era of Good Feelings,â⬠a period immediately after the War of 1812 during which a sense of national purpose and a desire for unity left most Americans disinterested in the partisan differences between multiple political parties. Basically, Americans simply assumed that their elected leaders would govern them well and wisely, no matter which political party they belonged to. During his term in office from 1817 to 1825, President James Monroe epitomized the spirit of the Era of Good Feelings by trying to completely eliminate partisan parties from national politics. The dissolution of the Federalist Party during the era left the Democratic-Republican Party the ââ¬Å"only party standingâ⬠as the First Party System ended with the tumultuous 1824 presidential election. The Rebirth of Multi-Party Politics In the 1824 election, there wereà four main candidates:à Henry Clay, Andrew Jackson, John Quincy Adams, and William Crawford. All competed as Democratic-Republicans. When none of the candidates won the majority of Electoral College votes required to be elected president, the task of choosing the winner was left to the House of Representatives, where things really got complicated. Based on the Electoral College vote, Jackson, Adams, and Crawford were the final three candidates to be considered by the House. While Henry Clay was not one of the finalists, he was the current Speaker of the House, making it his job to negotiate which one of his three recent rivals would be elected president.à Andrew Jackson had won both the most popular votes and the most electoral votes, but the House elected John Quincy Adams president instead. So grateful was Adams for the victory that he chose Clay to be his Secretary of State. Andrew Jackson vocally declared the election a ââ¬Å"corrupt bargain.â⬠As a hero of both the American Indian Wars and the War of 1812, Jackson was one of the nationââ¬â¢s most popular politicians. With the support of the public and local militia leaders, he created the Democratic Party. Then, with the help of his most influential supporter, Martin Van Buren, Jackson and his new Democratic Party ousted incumbent president Democratic-Republican John Quincy Adams in the presidential election of 1828. As president, Jackson named Van Buren his Secretary of State, and later as his Vice President. Sensing the growing trend of Americans to align with easily identifiable political parties, the Democratic-Republican Party, along with its leaders, John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay, recreated itself as the National Republican Party. Jacksonââ¬â¢s War on Banks Solidifies the Second Party System If the 1828 election had not been enough to solidify the peoplesââ¬â¢ interest in the spirit of the Second Party System, President Jacksonââ¬â¢s war on banks did. Jackson, who had always hated banks, condemned paper money and argued that only gold and silver should circulate. Jacksonââ¬â¢s first target, the federally-chartered Second Bank of the United States, operated much like a central bank similar to todayââ¬â¢s Federal Reserve System banks. After his banking policies forced the closure of the Second Bank of the United States, Jackson turned against all federally-sanctioned banks. During Jacksonââ¬â¢s first term, the Nullification Crisis of 1832 controversially weakened the powers of the states by upholding costly federal tariffsââ¬âtaxesââ¬âimposed on crops and grown in the Southern States. Anger over Jacksonââ¬â¢s policies gave rise to the Whig Party. The Whigs were made up mainly of bankers, economic modernizers, businessmen, commercial farmers, and Southern plantation owners, angered at Jacksonââ¬â¢s war on banking and his role in the Nullification Crisis. Along with the Democratic and Whig parties, several minor political parties evolved during the Second Party era. These included the innovative Anti-Masonic Party, the abolitionist Liberty Party, and the anti-slavery Free Soil Party. By the mid-1850s the Second Party System would be supplanted by what historians consider the Third Party System, which lasted until about 1900. Dominated by the new Republican Party, the era featured heated debates on issues such as American nationalism, industrial modernization, workersââ¬â¢ rights, and racial equality. The Legacyof the Second Party System The Second Party System aroused a new and healthy interest in government and politics among the American people. As the nation underwent democratization, participation in the political process played a central role in Americansââ¬â¢ lives for the first time since the Revolutionary War.à Prior to the Second Party System, most voters were content to defer to the assumed wisdom of upper-class elite, allowing them to choose their leaders for them. People rarely voted or became engaged because politics seemed unimportant to them. However, the publicââ¬â¢s indifference endedà following the 1828 presidential election and the controversies that arose during the Andrew Jackson administration. By 1840, elections at all levels of American government featured appeals to the ââ¬Å"common man,â⬠massive rallies, parades, celebrations, intense enthusiasm, and most importantly, high voter turnout. Today, the legacy of the Second Party System and its reawakeningà of public interest in political participation can be seen in the enactment of sweeping social policy such as womenââ¬â¢s suffrage, voting rights laws, and civil rights legislation. The Use of Nonfinancial Measures to Assess the Likelihood...
Abstract For auditors, failing to detect fraud at their clients is usually accompanied by substantial monetary penalties and/or negative publicity. Thus, the profession has re-evaluated its fraud assessment processes and has attempted to find new ways in which material misstatements due to fraud can be identified. The purpose of this study is to determine whether auditors can effectively use nonfinancial measures (NFMs) in their analyses of fraud. Given that auditors can identify NFMs (e.g., facilities growth) that should coincide with financial measures (e.g., revenue growth), inconsistencies between these two variables may be indicative of higher fraud risk. The results show that all of the respondents believed that financial measuresâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦To put it succinctly, if auditors take at face value everything they see or hear, they are not doing their jobs. A final reason auditors donââ¬â¢t uncover fraud is because they frequently donââ¬â¢t use the analytical tools t hat are available to them. 2 In times past, when analysis was difficult and time-consuming, perhaps auditors could not justify the additional effort (Joseph T. Wells, copyright 2003). The use of NFMs in the evaluation of firm performance has garnered much attention since Kaplan and Norton (1996) published the ââ¬Å"The Balanced Scorecard.â⬠For firms that fraudulently misstate their financial statements, it is unlikely that they will (or have the ability to) concurrently misstate NFMs that are indicative of their true financial condition. In another study conducted by Brazel, Jones and Zimbelman in 2005, they concluded that NFMs can convey new information not previously contained in financial statement variables that have been found to be correlated with fraud. In addition, their study showed that NFMs can be used as benchmark against which the auditors can compare actual revenue to enhance the effectiveness of their analytical procedures during fraud risk assessment. Oftentimes, auditors look at the financial measures as the basis in detecting the likelihood of fraud in the firms being audited. This strategy has been proven to be effective most of the time. Rhetorical Analysis Of The Clock Shadows And Dark...
Aristotelian mimesis dictates that the ââ¬Å"artâ⬠produced by our culture and society is an imitation of our reality. If so, then our contemporary entertainment era overstocked in brooding, morally ambiguous anti-heroes bearing five oââ¬â¢clock shadows and ââ¬Å"dark and grittyâ⬠narratives are a reflection of the flawed and unrelenting modern-day reality that we inhabit. This age of morally gray storytelling is a stark contrast to the idealistic depictions of American society and ââ¬Å"traditional family valuesâ⬠found throughout various 1950s television (Museum of Broadcast Communications). The force behind this shift from a rather jubilant, dreamlike state of Cold War era media, to the grim and cynical state of present-day film, television, and music can thus be interpreted by some romanticists with a longing for the ââ¬Å"good olââ¬â¢ daysâ⬠as a decline of virtues and goodness in American society. However, the ââ¬Å"goodnessâ⬠of America foun d in 1950s media was hardly a true reflection of reality. Through the further development of mass media and communications in the following decades, however, American audiences were then able to see passed the ââ¬Å"goodnessâ⬠from the shelter of their own homes (Murray). The realities that went into the lenses of news cameras, and out the screens of black and white television tubes exposed the horrors of war in Vietnam and the injustice towards nonviolent Black protestors to the archetypical nuclear families of America, distorting their idealized perceptions of AmericanShow MoreRelatedStrategy Safari by Mintzberg71628 Words à |à 287 Pagesway to ensure that strategy is controlled in one mind is to keep the process simple (182).
